Millions of users in Nigeria and across the globe could lose access to WhatsApp starting May 5, 2025, as Meta phases out support for older smartphones that no longer meet its security and performance standards.
The update will impact both personal users and small businesses relying on WhatsApp Business, as the platform continues aligning with modern operating systems to ensure security and stability.
“As technology advances, phasing out support for older hardware is necessary to maintain app functionality and security,” said Meta in an official statement.
iPhones That Will Be Affected:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
These models are stuck on iOS 12.5.7, below the new minimum requirement of iOS 15.1. As a result, WhatsApp will no longer function on them after the cutoff date.
Android Devices Losing Access Include:
- Samsung: Galaxy S3, Note 2, Ace 3, S4 Mini
- Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Moto E (2014), Razr HD
- HTC: One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
- LG: Optimus G, L90
- Sony: Xperia Z, SP, T, V
- Nexus 4
This follows WhatsApp’s earlier move to end support for Android 4.4 (KitKat) as of January 1, 2025. Devices must now run at least Android 5.0 (Lollipop) to remain compatible.
What Users Should Do:
To continue using WhatsApp seamlessly:
- Upgrade to a device running iOS 15.1 or Android 5.0+
- Back up chats before switching devices to preserve your data
- Visit WhatsApp’s FAQ for guidance on transferring accounts
As Meta continues to optimize for newer technologies, users are urged to stay updated to avoid service disruption and ensure access to the latest features and security protections.
