In a rare academic triumph, twin brothers Matthew and Matthias Busoye have made history at the University of Ibadan, graduating with identical first-class honours degrees — and matching CGPAs — from the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering.
Both brothers earned a CGPA of 3.94 out of 4.00, topping not only their department but also emerging as the best graduating students in the entire Faculty of Technology for the 2023/2024 academic session.
The announcement was shared via social media this week, where Matthias reflected on their remarkable academic journey. He highlighted how they consistently ranked among the top of their class from their very first year, building their academic records semester after semester.
At 100 level, Matthew and Matthias posted CGPAs of 3.89 and 3.84 respectively. By 200 level, they had inched even closer, with scores of 3.94 and 3.92. This pattern of academic excellence continued throughout their five-year programme, culminating in a shared 3.94 CGPA at graduation.
Their success extended beyond academics. Matthew served as President of the Society of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Students (SEEEES-UI), while Matthias held office as Speaker of the 11th Assembly of the Students’ Representative Council, UI — showing a commitment to leadership as well as learning.
In a speech at their faculty’s induction ceremony, Matthew acknowledged the magnitude of the moment. “Truth be told, this still feels surreal,” he wrote in a follow-up post on Thursday. “My brother and I standing here today isn’t a reflection of being the most deserving or most diligent students; far from it. But for some reason, we are here.”
Their story has sparked admiration across social media, with many praising not just their intellectual brilliance, but also their humility and grace.
A now-viral image from their graduation ceremony captured an emotional moment as their mother held their hands in prayer — a quiet, powerful celebration of years of dedication and sacrifice.

Another video from the induction event showed the twin brothers receiving thunderous applause as they were called to the stage together — a fitting tribute to an extraordinary academic journey shared in lockstep.
