Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has issued a powerful call to party members, urging them to stand firm in the face of adversity. Addressing party members during the ongoing National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja, Obi underscored the critical state of Nigeria, emphasizing that the country is on the brink of collapse and needs urgent intervention.
“Do not fear anybody. Those who were afraid yesterday didn’t do any better,” Obi declared. He stressed the urgency of speaking out against the country’s deteriorating conditions, citing clear economic indicators that show Nigerians are growing poorer by the day. “The numbers are clear; the indices are clear—people are getting poorer every day,” he added.
Obi highlighted the importance of unity and inclusion within the Labour Party, reiterating that the party is a “family” that welcomes everyone. “Labour Party has chosen to be a family, and we must do everything as a family. It’s not about Peter Obi’s choice; it’s everyone’s choice. This family excludes no one,” he said, reinforcing the need for fairness and justice.
Looking ahead to the next elections, Obi set a clear agenda for the party: to be fully prepared and offer Nigerians the best and most competent candidates across various political offices, including the House of Representatives, Senate, and the Presidency. “We want to go into the next election fully prepared, offering Nigerians the best and most competent candidates for the House of Representatives, the Senate, Governorships, and the Presidency,” he declared.
Obi also emphasized the importance of loyalty and competence for anyone seeking to contest under the Labour Party banner. “We want to correct the mistakes we made in the past. Anyone seeking to contest under our party must be a committed member, not just someone passing through. They must be competent,” he concluded, setting the tone for the party’s future direction.
