The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army has intensified its fight against crude oil theft, arresting 39 suspected oil thieves and dismantling 18 illegal refineries across multiple states in the Niger Delta region.
The operation, which lasted six days (March 24–30, 2025), also led to the seizure of over 60,000 litres of stolen petroleum products. Conducted in collaboration with other security agencies, the crackdown targeted illegal refining sites and distribution networks.
Massive Seizures and Dismantled Sites
In a statement issued on Monday, Lt. Col. Jonah Danjuma, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 6 Division, detailed the scale of the operation:
“Troops intercepted an inbuilt fabricated twin tank stocked with 18,000 litres of stolen products in Rivers State along Ochokocho Road in Etche Local Government Area. Additionally, a MAN Diesel truck, concealed with bags of sawdust to hide stolen crude, was seized. The suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled upon sighting troops.”
Further seizures included:
✅ 15,000 litres of stolen petroleum products along the Imo River.
✅ 2,800 litres of illegally refined fuel at Rumuekpe Forest in Ahoada East LGA.
✅ Large-scale dismantling of illegal refining sites in Ebocha, Omoku, and Jelikri Creek (Degema LGA).
Bayelsa and Delta State Operations Yield Similar Success
The army reported successful raids in Bayelsa and Delta States, where troops uncovered and dismantled multiple illegal refining operations.
In Bayelsa State (Adibawa, Yenagoa LGA & Okighene, Southern Ijaw LGA):
- Over 8,000 litres of stolen crude oil recovered.
- Illegal refining equipment, including cooking ovens and drums, seized.
In Delta State (Egbokodo Itsekiri Community, Warri South LGA):
- Troops confiscated several jerricans filled with illegally refined diesel (AGO).
- Cellophane bags used for storing stolen petroleum products were destroyed.
In Akwa Ibom State, soldiers maintained strong territorial dominance, preventing oil thieves from operating freely.
Army Issues Stern Warning to Oil Thieves
The General Officer Commanding, 6 Division, Major General Emmanue Emekah, has ordered an intensified crackdown on oil thieves, urging troops to sustain operations and protect national assets.
“Those involved in illegal oil bunkering should turn a new leaf and engage in legitimate businesses, or they will face the full weight of the law,” Emekah warned.
This latest operation marks a significant step in combating crude oil theft, which has long plagued Nigeria’s economy and energy sector.
