In a bid to enhance national security and streamline immigration procedures, the Nigerian government is set to introduce an e-visa system and digital landing/exit cards. Announced by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, on Wednesday, this innovative move aims to simplify visa applications and improve border security.
Keyamo revealed that the e-visa system will allow travelers to submit their visa applications and upload necessary documents online, bypassing the traditional manual submission process. Additionally, the current paper-based landing and exit cards will be digitized, requiring travelers to pre-fill their details before their trip to Nigeria.
“This reflects our government’s commitment to inter-ministerial collaboration, particularly between the Ministries of Aviation and Interior,” Keyamo said, emphasizing the importance of cooperation between overlapping ministries.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, joined Keyamo in the announcement, confirming that the new system will go live on May 1. Tunji-Ojo further stated that the e-visa application process would be free, making it easier for travelers to visit Nigeria while simultaneously bolstering security protocols.
Under the new system, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) will oversee the digital landing and exit cards. Travelers will be required to fill out the necessary information online before boarding their flight, ensuring a smoother process upon arrival. Tunji-Ojo also highlighted that the integration of global criminal record checks and improved background vetting would help eliminate security risks.
“This initiative is designed to facilitate travel while ensuring the highest levels of security,” Tunji-Ojo stated, underscoring the joint role of both the Aviation and Interior ministries in the project’s success.
The launch of this digital system marks a significant step forward in Nigeria’s modernization efforts, aiming to open its borders while safeguarding national interests.
