The National Assembly has postponed the resumption of plenary sessions for both chambers by one week, moving the official return date from Tuesday, April 29 to Tuesday, May 6, 2025.
In a formal notice issued by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, the extension is intended to allow senators and members of the House of Representatives to fully participate in the forthcoming Workers’ Day celebrations and attend to obligations within their respective constituencies.
“I am directed to inform Distinguished Senators, Honourable Members, and the general public that the two Houses of the National Assembly have extended the date for resumption of plenary sessions,” the notice reads.
“This extension allows Distinguished Senators and Honourable Members to participate in the Workers’ Day ceremony and attend to other engagements in their constituencies.”
The notification concludes with an apology for any inconvenience the change may cause, along with an appeal for public understanding.
The rescheduled date affects all legislative activities within both the Senate and the House of Representatives, with normal proceedings now set to resume on May 6. The extension comes amid growing public scrutiny over legislative output and the perceived disconnect between lawmakers and the citizens they represent.
As Nigerians prepare to mark Workers’ Day on May 1, attention is also shifting to how effectively lawmakers will use this additional time to re-engage with grassroots issues before returning to Abuja.
