In a strategic move to recalibrate the Labour Party’s future, 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti have jointly summoned a crucial meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC). The meeting is scheduled to take place in Abuja on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
The notice, signed by Ibrahim Umar, spokesperson for the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), outlines a two-part event—first, a formal NEC session, followed by a stakeholder town hall engagement set to be held concurrently at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.
According to the announcement, the gathering will bring together key figures from across the Labour Party’s political architecture. Attendees will include Obi’s 2023 running mate, prominent senators (both serving and former), House of Representatives members and candidates from the last general election, as well as former gubernatorial aspirants still affiliated with the party.
Also expected at the meeting are members of the recently formed National Caretaker Committee (NTC), delegates from the NLC/TUC Political Commission, and former members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
This NEC meeting comes on the heels of last week’s Supreme Court ruling, which officially nullified the leadership of Julius Abure and effectively disbanded his faction of the party’s NWC. The ruling is seen as a turning point for internal restructuring within the Labour Party.
Political observers view the April 9 NEC meeting as a pivotal moment for the party—an opportunity not only to restore cohesion but to define a unified path forward in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.
With Obi and Otti at the helm, the Labour Party appears poised to renew its grassroots connection and reaffirm its position as a key opposition force in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
